Genesis 1:1: The Ultimate “Wait a Minute…”

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” – Genesis 1:1 (KJV)

So I was sitting here reading Genesis, and I got stuck on the very first verse.

Not because it’s complicated.

Actually, because it’s so simple.

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

That’s it.

The Bible doesn’t waste any time.

It doesn’t start with a family tree.

It doesn’t start with a list of rules.

It doesn’t even start with us.

It starts with God.

And the more I thought about it, the more my brain started doing cartwheels.

Because before there was an earth, there was God.

Before there were oceans, mountains, tacos, coffee, dogs, cats, and that one sock currently missing from my laundry basket, there was God.

He wasn’t created.

He didn’t suddenly appear.

He was already there.

I don’t know why, but I find that incredibly comforting.

Life changes constantly. People change. Circumstances change.

But God doesn’t.

The same God who was there before the beginning is the same God who is with us today.

And if He can create an entire universe from nothing, I’m pretty sure He can handle whatever chaos I’ve got going on this week.

Honestly, that’s one of my favorite things about Genesis 1:1.

It’s not just telling us how everything started.

It’s reminding us who was there before any of it started.

God.

And that’s a pretty solid place to begin.
